  • Ms. Zengyan Sun (Vice-President, Student Affairs): 778-587-6688

Accidents and Medical Emergencies

  • In case of a serious injury or medical emergency, immediately call 911 (or 9-911 from a campus phone).
  • Provide your exact location, including the building name, floor, and room number.
  • Inform the nearest instructor or staff member. If you are unable to do so, ask another student to help.

Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Victoria is located in an earthquake-prone region. Be familiar with the following procedures:

During the shaking:

  • Indoors: Drop, cover, and hold on under a desk or against an interior wall. Avoid doorways.
  • Outdoors: Move to an open area away from buildings, trees, and power lines. Drop, cover, and hold on.
  • In a vehicle: Pull over safely away from overpasses and power lines. Stay inside until the shaking stops.

After the shaking:

  • Be prepared for aftershocks. Drop, cover, and hold again if necessary.
  • Check yourself and others for injuries.
  • Evacuate carefully if there is visible building damage.
  • Use telephones only to report emergencies.
  • Do not pull the fire alarm unless there is an actual fire.
  • Oshio College of Acupuncture and Herbology is not located in a tsunami hazard zone. However, if you are elsewhere, move to higher ground after an earthquake.

Fires

Fires are a serious risk. Know your evacuation routes and follow these steps:

If you see fire or smoke:

  • Pull the nearest fire alarm.
  • Call 911 (or 9-911 from a campus phone).
  • Notify a staff member.
  • Use a fire extinguisher if the fire is small and safe to handle.
  • Evacuate calmly, closing doors behind you. Do not use elevators.

If trapped:

  • Close doors to block smoke and fire.
  • Signal from windows for help.
  • Drop low to the ground to avoid smoke inhalation.
  • Stop, drop, and roll if your clothing catches fire.

Active Threat / Violence on Campus

If there is an active threat (e.g., person with a weapon), follow these options:

Get Out (Evacuate if safe):

  • Leave if you know where the threat is.
  • Keep hands visible and follow police instructions.

Hide (If evacuation is unsafe):

  • Lock and barricade doors.
  • Turn off lights, silence phones.
  • Stay hidden behind solid objects.

Fight (Only as a last resort):

  • Fight to incapacitate the attacker if your life is in imminent danger.

When police arrive:

  • Stay calm.
  • Keep hands visible.
  • Follow all instructions.
  • Do not approach officers or scream.

Important Information to Report to 911:

  • Location and description of the threat.
  • Number of suspects and weapons involved.
  • Number of victims (if known).

Extreme Heat / Heat Domes

Victoria occasionally experiences extreme heat events.

Heat Warning:

  • Issued when daytime highs are expected to reach 29°C or higher, and nighttime lows stay above 16°C for two or more days.
